Katherine "Kay" Elaine (Benedict) Hinners

July 15, 1935 ~ September 17, 2016 (age 81) 81 Years Old

Katherine "Kay" Benedict was born on July 15, 1935, in Pomeroy, IA, the daughter of Claude and Katherine (Greve) Benedict. Kay was baptized as an infant at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pomeroy where she remained a life-long member. In her youth, Kay attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Pomeroy. She then continued her education and graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1953. On October 2, 1954, she was united in marriage with Kenneth Hinners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pomeroy. Together, they were blessed with fourteen children and married for sixty-one years.

In her free time, Kay enjoyed going to auctions and garage sales. She had a love for antiques, especially glassware. Kay was proud of her Native American heritage and often kept Native American art and décor in her house. She enjoyed wildlife, flowers, and driving around South Twin. Kay devoted her life to spending time with family, especially with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kay and Kenny spent time together by attending countless sporting events for their grandchildren. When Kay’s health declined, she never failed to listen to games on the radio. Her pride for their accomplishments evident in her conversation. Kay spent endless hours in the kitchen, cooking for her family. Kay was best known for her large pan-fried chicken dinners. The kids would never miss a Sunday dinner gathered around the big round table. When chicken or squirrels were not available, Kay would cruise the country-side hunting for pheasants with a car full of her children. Kay was a strong-willed woman who lived her life the way she wanted to. She was a very unselfish person who would give anything to make someone else’s life better, especially for her family. Kay never failed to entertain her family and will be remembered for her witty one-liners and sharp sense of humor. Kay’s family often came to her for life advice and she wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is. Kay was the heart, soul, and life of her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She always had a favorite…it was whoever needed her the most.

Kay is survived by her husband Kenneth; their children Michael Hinners of Pomeroy, IA; Kimberly (Mike) Hart of Fort Benton, MT; Timothy (Barb) Hinners of Pomeroy, IA; Stephanie (Chuck) Long of Pomeroy, IA; Sandi (Roger) Huster of Sac City, IA; Darren Hinners of Pomeroy, IA; Tony (Delsey) Hinners Dayton, IA; Gabrielle (Doug) Hepperle of Pomeroy, IA; Kendra (Bryan) Williams  New Rochelle, NY; Paul (Sonja) Hinners of Centerville, IA; Alicia (Kelsey) Staiert of Fonda, IA; Brock (Janelle) Hinners of Pomeroy, IA; 44 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; brothers Thomas Benedict of Florence, OR; William Benedict of Ft.
