Kathleen Evelyn George was born November 27, 1936, in Pomeroy, IA. She graduated 8th grade from Immanuel Lutheran School, Pomeroy, and Pomeroy High School in the class of 1954. On February 1, 1959, she was united in marriage to Donald Lee Birkey at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pomeroy. The couple established their home in Manson.
Katie worked as a bank teller at the State Bank in Fort Dodge for 25 years. She then worked for 20 years at First Federal Savings and Loan in Manson. She was a member of the Manson Watanye chapter since 1986. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church for almost 60 years and taught confirmation class and participated in a variety of activities for Lutheran Church Women. She participated in a number of Calhoun County Relay for Life events and the survivors lap.
Katie enjoyed gardening and growing flowers, sewing and quilting, playing card games, and hosting friends and family at her home. She looked forward to get-togethers with former work friends, the Watanye ladies, the Pomeroy Class of ’54 Lunch Bunch, and most of all spending time with her granddaughters. She provided a home filled with love, laughter and many memories.
Katie is survived by her husband of almost 61 years, Donald; children, Jay Birkey of Fort Dodge; Mitch (Amy) Birkey of Sheboygan, WI; 2 grandchildren, Mackenzie Birkey of Bowling Green, KY and Holland Birkey of Sheboygan, WI; siblings, Marilyn (Ken) Dayton of Pocahontas; Gordon (Tangela) George of Maxwell, IA; brother-in-law, Marvin (Linda) Birkey of LaVista, NE.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Myrtle (Cassen) George; sons, Russell Dean Birkey and David Lee Birkey; brothers Ken George, Duane George, Richard George; sisters Carolyn Vial and Yvonne Holmes; in-laws, Simon and Erma Birkey, Phyllis George, Dixie George, Harold Vial, Butch Holmes, Earl and Marlys Birkey, Jerry Birkey; nephews Paul Dayton and Clay Birkey; niece Connie Birkey.
