Irene Hagan Sweet, 87, of Manson, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2022, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Our Savior Methodist Church in Manson.  Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Larson-Weishaar Funeral Home in Manson.  Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Manson.

Irene Hagan, the daughter of Lloyd and Mildred (Kindred) Hagan, was born February 27, 1935, at Pleasanton, Iowa.  As a child, she made her home with her family on various farms around Iowa and graduated from Algona High School in 1953.  She attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri where she held two majors and three minors, graduating with honors in 1957.  Following her education, Irene served as a fifth-grade teacher in the Manson School district.  On June 23, 1959, Irene was united in marriage to Dennis Sweet at the United Methodist Church in Pocahontas and the couple made their home at Pocahontas for a year before moving to Manson.  After starting their family, Irene worked part-time as a nurse’s aide, returning to teaching in 1968.  A dedicated teacher, Irene established the Talented and Gifted program and taught Remedial Reading in Manson.  She retired in 1997.  On May 12, 2012, Dennis passed away and Irene continued to maintain her home in Manson until moving to Golden Meadows in 2013.

Irene was a member of Our Savior Methodist Church in Manson where she helped with Vacation Bible School.  She enjoyed reading and journaling.  She had a passion for family history and genealogy and looked forward to family reunions especially at Bethel Church in Missouri.  A talented person, Irene expressed herself through painting, scrap booking, and crafts.  She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and old-time country music.  She also enjoyed traveling with friends and family and the winters she spent with Dennis in Arizona.  Above all, Irene cherished the time spent with her family.
