Arnold Bryon Smith, Jr was born on January 15, 1933 in Benhams, Virginia, the son of Arnold and Effie Smith. He grew up in Webster City, Iowa and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951. He joined the Air Force in 1952. While attending Tobin Business School in Fort Dodge, he met his wife, Geraldine Thoel. They were united in marriage on June 16, 1962 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Manson. They made their home in Manson and were actively involved in the community. Arnold retired from Crouse Cartage Company in 1995 after 31 years of service.
Arnold was on the board of directors for a credit union; secretary of the Manson Lions Club; and member for Manson Quasquicentennial; Manson Greater Crater Days and American Legion. He volunteered for the Manson Community Care program and Manson Park Board. He and Gerri were also members of the Buttons and Bows Square Dancing Club in the 1970s. He took up woodworking as a hobby in 1980s. Arnold enjoyed golfing each summer and bowled in a league in Fort Dodge and Manson for several years.
Arnold is survived by his sister, Norma Schutt, Jefferson; sister-in-law Julia Thoel, Manson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gerri Smith in 2015; sisters, Audrey Hutson, Betty Burke, Lynda Brown, Nancy Smith and Wanda Dingman.
