James Bruce Obituary

LAKE CITY--James LeRoy Bruce born 1-22-36 passed away quietly 5-5-19 at Stewart Memorial Hospital in his home town of Lake City, Iowa.  He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth (Madden) Bruce and father Roy Bruce.   

Jim attended K-12 in Lake City.  He received at BA in Education from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.  Jim served in the Army after college.  He taught English in Albert City and Cherokee.  Mr. Bruce then moved to Chicago and worked for the PTA while attending Indiana University where he received his master’s degree.  James also worked at Planned Parenthood.  He then attended Northwestern in Chicago where he received his RN degree.  Mr. Bruce worked  as a nurse and later was involved in medical research at Northwestern Memorial Hospital until his retirement. 

After retirement Jim returned to Lake City, Iowa where he was co-writer of the “Years Ago” column for the Lake City Graphic.  He also served, until his death, on the Cottonwood Preservation Committee, Central School Museum Board, and was Treasurer for many years at Woodlawn Christian Church.  James traveled south to Weslaco, Texas for several winters.   

There will be visitation one hour prior to a Celebration of Life service which will be held at the Woodlawn Christian Church at 10:30 on May 18th.
