Carol Tammen Obituary

Carol Frances Tammen was born in Aurora, IA, on July 18, 1941 to Irving and Elsie (Brickman) Loomis. She was a twin to a brother, Carl, and sixth in a family of nine children. After graduating from Arlington High School in 1959, she attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where she earned a bachelor's degree in 1963.

Carol began her working career at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids. Later, she took a job as a social worker for Lutheran Family Services. She loved helping people and found great satisfaction in assisting the children at LFS, especially when she was able to place the children with an adoptive family. She worked there about 15 years.

In 1983, Carol was hired as a tutor in the VESS (Vocational Education for Special Students) program at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. In her 25 years there, she helped hundreds of students and made lifelong friends.

She was an accomplished note writer, remembering people on birthdays and other special occasions. Carol was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, and served many years as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. Carol possessed a fun-loving spirit. She loved to laugh, share jokes and stories, and enjoy coffee with family and friends.  She enjoyed country music, Elvis music, and collecting clowns. She also loved to dance, and it was at the Laramar Ballroom that she met her husband, Les Tammen. They married on April 8, 1972, and Carol soon acclimated to life in the country a mile west of Manson.

The Tammens raised two sons, Don and Ryan, and have six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Carol passed on her love of dancing to the grandchildren by teaching them to polka.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Les of Manson; son Don (Sharon) Tammen of Renwick, IA; son Ryan Tammen of Manson, IA; grandchildren Clint and Jill Tammen of Evans, GA; Travis and Brandi Tammen of Goldfield, IA; Andrew and Anna Lee of Leavenworth, KS; great grandchildren Genevieve, Braiden, Taelynn, Jacob, Josiah, Tripp, Henry, Georgia, Donald, and Tessa. Her passing is also grieved by her sisters Donna Murphy of Cedar Rapids, IA; Marge Grimm of Waverly IA; and Dorothy (Lee) Buhr of Oelwein, IA.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents Irving and Elsie Loomis; brothers Carl Loomis, Gene Loomis, and Bob Loomis; and sisters Fern Hock and Evelyn Loomis.
